The terms vertebrate and invertebrate are used often in classrooms and the media so they're worth learning. First of all, only about 1-3% of the animal species are vertebrates. The main groups are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds (which are considered a group of reptiles) and mammals. They all have a chain of bones called vertebrae that you can feel in middle of your own back.
